Vice President and Executive Director of Research, East West Centre, Hawaii 

 

Karena Lyons is the Vice President at the East-West Center in Honolulu, as well as strategic lead for all Pacific initiatives across the Center and Director of the Research Department. She is also Director of the Pacific Islands Development Program, which is a member of the Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific.

In May 2019, Ms Lyons retired from a career in the New Zealand Foreign Ministry, most recently posted as Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau. She also served as Consul General to Hawai‘i, and Envoy to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command - the U.S military combined armed forces command, responsible for prosecuting US security interests across half the earth’s surface and 38 countries including China, North Korea, and Pacific Islands nations. 

Previously, Ms Lyons served as Foreign Policy Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs; as Strategist and Negotiator on the United Nations Security Council; and faculty member at the Auckland University’s School of Law. She is a dedicated member of the Pacific diaspora living in the US.
